Signed out of Chrome or removed a profile, and your tabs are gone?
Updated October 27, 2026
You signed out of Chrome, or removed a Chrome profile, and your tabs and more disappeared. 10 people said they have this question on one Chrome Help thread (Forced to sign out of chrome and have lost all bookmarks, passwords, etc.). What you can get back depends on what was saved in your Google Account.
What signing out does
Google: "When you sign out of Chrome, your info is kept safe in your Google Account and removed from the device." (Google's sync help) So anything that was saved in your account comes back when you sign in again. Your open tabs and history are only in your account if History and tabs was turned on (Google's sync help).
Don't delete anything at chrome.google.com/data. Google's sign-in page shows that address as the way to delete saved info from your Google Account (Google's sign-in help). That's the copy you're trying to get back.
1. Sign back in with the same account
- At the top right of Chrome, select your profile picture, then Sign in to Chrome (Google's sign-in help).
- Use the same Google Account as before.
- Open ⋮, then Settings, then You and Google, select your account name, and make sure History and tabs is on (Google's sync help).
2. Look for your tabs
- Tab groups: ⋮, then Tab groups. Saved groups sync when History and tabs is on (Google's tab help).
- Tabs from other devices: ⋮, then History, then History, then Tabs from other devices (Google's sync help).
- History: press Ctrl+H (Mac: ⌘+Y). With history synced, it also shows pages from your other devices (Google's History help).
3. If you removed a profile
Google: "After you remove a profile from Chrome, the profile's bookmarks, history, passwords, and other settings are erased from the computer." (Google's profiles help) What's left:
- If that profile was signed in, sign in again with the same account in a new profile, and do steps 1 and 2.
- If it wasn't signed in, the only other copy is a backup of your computer (for example Windows File History or Mac Time Machine) that includes Chrome's folder. Those locations are in Chromium's user data documentation.
4. Check you're in the right profile
Click your profile picture at the top right of Chrome. If more than one profile is listed, open each one and look. Each profile keeps its own history, bookmarks and settings, so the "missing" tabs may be sitting in the profile Chrome didn't open (Google's profiles help). To pick a profile every time Chrome starts, open the same menu, choose Manage Chrome profiles and check Show on startup.
Questions
Why did Chrome sign me out on its own?
Google's help doesn't give one answer for this. Whatever the cause, the steps are the same: sign in with the same account and check what synced.
My tabs weren't synced. Is there anything else?
Your browsing history on this computer may still be there if you didn't remove the profile (Google's History help). Otherwise, only a backup of your computer can help.
So it never happens again
Sync only protects what you told it to save, and a removed profile takes everything else with it. That's why we made Never Lose Tabs, a Chrome extension that keeps its own copies of your tabs:
- Restore points, automatically. As you browse, it saves every window, tab, tab group and pinned tab. There's nothing to click and nothing to remember.
- An hourly backup file you hold. Every hour you browse, it writes a backup file to Downloads/NeverLoseTabs. It's outside Chrome, so it survives a reinstall of Chrome or of the extension, and you can copy it to a new computer.
- A Restore button after a crash. If Chrome comes back with a big part of your tabs missing, the icon shows a red !. Click it, then Restore, and every window comes back, with your tab groups' names and colors.
- Free protection, forever. Everything is unlocked for 14 days. After that, auto-save, crash recovery, backup files and restore stay free. Pro (folders, tags, notes and more) is a one-time $5, not a subscription.
It can't bring back tabs lost before you install it. It protects you from today on. It runs on Chrome on your computer, not on phones.
