Google Form™ hall pass slow or crashing? Here's why, and the fix
Updated October 20, 2026
Hall passes, attendance, tardies and sign-in sheets are some of the busiest Google Forms™ forms anywhere. A school that logs 1,000 passes a day collects 100,000 responses in about three months, and teachers notice the slowdown long before that.
One teacher, quoted by a hall-pass software company, described a Google Form™ hall pass that "took forever to load, sometimes it would crash," and was "only getting cleared about two times a month."
Why it gets slow
Every response stays in the form until someone deletes it, and the form's spreadsheet keeps growing. Google lists the effects on Google's help page:
| Responses in one form | What Google says happens |
|---|---|
| 10,000 | The question and individual views may disappear, and a downloaded CSV may not be sorted by time. |
| 50,000 | The response summary may not appear. |
| 100,000 | Responses may stop syncing to the linked Google Sheets™ spreadsheet. |
| 500,000 or 1 GB | The form stops accepting new responses (limits announced for September 2026). |
The fix: keep the form small, keep the history
- Keep a complete archive of every pass in a spreadsheet.
- Clear older responses from the form often, for example keeping only this week or the last 5,000.
- Do it on a schedule, so nobody has to remember.
Form Keeper does all three: a one-click archive in your Google Drive™, a check of every copy before anything is cleared, and clearing every night, week or month, or when the form reaches a number you choose. The free plan covers one form completely.
See exactly where your form stands
Form Keeper's free health meter shows your response count, how fast it's growing, and the date your form reaches each of Google's limits. It can also archive every response to a sheet you own and clear old ones on a schedule, without losing anything. Learn about Form Keeper.
