Google Form™ stopped accepting responses? The 500,000 and 1 GB limit
Updated October 20, 2026
If a busy Google Forms™ form suddenly stops taking submissions and you didn't close it, check whether it hit Google's new cap. According to Google's help page, from September 2026 each form is limited to 500,000 responses or 1 GB of total storage, and it stops accepting responses at either limit. Google says an alert appears in the form when you approach or exceed the limits.
Other reasons a form stops accepting responses
- Someone switched off Accepting responses in the Responses tab.
- A response-limit add-on closed it on purpose (date, count or quota).
- The form now requires sign-in and respondents aren't signed in to an allowed account.
Getting it working again
- Download all responses as a CSV first, so nothing is lost.
- Bring the form under the limit by deleting responses you've confirmed are saved. On a big form, Google's Responses tab only deletes them all at once.
- Turn Accepting responses back on if it was switched off.
To avoid hitting the wall again, keep a running archive and clear older responses regularly. Form Keeper does this on a schedule, checking each response in the archive before it leaves the form.
See exactly where your form stands
Form Keeper's free health meter shows your response count, how fast it's growing, and the date your form reaches each of Google's limits. It can also archive every response to a sheet you own and clear old ones on a schedule, without losing anything. Learn about Form Keeper.
